Our Founders
Jim Schmidt, PT, MBA, CEO
Jim recieved his BS in Physical Therapy from the University of Florida in 1987 and a Master of Business Administration from James Madison University in 2002. He boasts over 22 years of Physical Therapy experience. Jim has worked in Sports Medicine with ATP World Tour professionals, golf professionals, and the olympic diving team as well as collegiate athletes in Boca Raton, FL. He was also the Sports Medicine Director for the Lewis Gale Hospital working with the area High School atheletes and ATC and Roanoke College in Roanoke, VA. In addition, Jim worked for the Scandia Centrum Spine Center in Charlottesville, concentrating specifically on back and neck patients and post operative spine patients, laminectomy, fusion, discentony, stenosis, etc. Jim also worked for Martha Jefferson Home Care, and was the Administrator for Atlantic Sports & Rehab.
In undergoing four back surgeries, Jim understands and can empathize with the pain his patients are feeling. He specializes in spine related problems and sports injuries. He and Melissa opened Advanced almost 4 years ago with a mission to glorify God by serving the physical therapy needs of others. Advanced Center for Physical Therapy is an extension of this mission to help everyone who comes in for relief from pain and improved functioning on a level that satisfies their goals and life’s enjoyments. Jim and Melissa have two boys, Derek and Patrick, Harley the Labrodor and Jackie the cat.

Melissa Schmidt, PT, President
Melissa graduated from University of Florida in 1988 with a BS in Physical Therapy. She has 6 years experience in out patient orthopaedics, 10 years in home care (Martha Jefferson) and 2 years in rehabilitation. She enjoys working with patients who suffer with low back pain, and those with neurological disorders. In order to assist people to regain their functional mobility and enjoy their life again, Melissa became a therapist to help accomplish these goals. Jim and Melissa opened Advanced because they wanted to provide a service to the community by creating an environment where patients feel that they are listened to and cared for by the entire staff. She is a native Floridian who enjoys living and working in Charlottesville.
