Holiday Press Release: December 4, 2009. From desk of our CEO, Jim Schmidt.

Fall is a time of change. I am always energized to see the beautiful landscapes of Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley and Blue Ridge Mountains change from green to rich blazing colors. I can make a fire in my fireplace, pull out my sweaters and polartech jacket and take a walk on wooded trails in the brisk breeze. This is my favorite time of year. This fall is also a time of growth and change for our business – a time of very positive change! Without further ado, let me give you the news and tell you all why I am excited.

For many years, I have been privileged to share with many of you the course of my own back pain and multiple surgery challenges. For those who don’t know, I have previously had four back surgeries. This past Spring, it was found that my last fusion from ten years ago at Johns Hopkins Hospital did not fuse. It was a non-union of the fusion. This event was no fault of the surgery itself but was that of other complications outside of my control. Therefore, on October 12, 2009, I underwent a fifth surgery at Johns Hopkins and am now at home now recovering. While recovery is sometimes a longer process than I had hoped for, I can honestly say that all is going according to plan. Daily, I am telling myself all the advice I have told many of you: “It takes time. Be patient and it will all work out.” So, for now, I am at home working on healing, walking, getting stronger and more flexible and, of course, keeping up on the all important core exercises.

As I approached this fifth surgery, I began over the summer and early fall to mentor a new rehabilitation manager to take over treating our patients at Advanced to the highest quality of which have been known for over four years. My departure from the Greene office is now managed by my Director of Rehabilitation, Carl Zovko, PT, DPT. Carl moved from our Charlottesville office in October and quickly stepped into his new role. Carl is extremely talented in many aspects as a physical therapist, has a great passion for sports medicine and sports in general. His wife, Lindsey, a school teacher, is an incredible support to him as he contributes to our community and the two of them await the end of the year with great anticipation as they are expecting their first child. I am personally and professionally so confident in Carl’s skills that I have asked him to manage my own physical therapy at the Greene office that will hopefully start in early January.

The staff at our clinic in Greene continues to serve the needs of Charlottesville’s northern neighbors with the great service you’ve all come to expect from us at Advanced. Many of you know that our PT Assistant, Kristin McKillip, PTA is due to have her baby very soon. She continues to serve patients during her final term of pregnancy and is very excited to take on her future role as mom this coming January. Michele Twyman, Front Desk Receptionist, is also due to have her baby this coming March. Krista Landing, PT Tech, is recently new to our clinic. Her exceptional ability to learn quickly and promptly care for the needs of our patients has made an incredibly positive impact on our ability to see the great results we have on a daily basis. My heart-felt thanks go out to all my staff who continue to restore our patients back to hope and good health!

In addition to these transitions, I am pleased to announce that this coming May marks the addition of a new clinic in Crozet, Virginia! Located just 12 miles west of Charlottesville in Old Trail Village, our brand new 2600+ square foot facility will bring our legendary service to our Western Albemarle neighbors. Old Trail Village is beautifully designed and situated at the base of the glorious Blue Ridge Mountains, sporting its own publically accessible Golf course, large Olympic outdoor pool, over eight miles of walking trails, a community sports field and wonderful locally-owned businesses such as Trailside Coffee, da Luca Cafe’ & Wine Bar, Face Value Studio, Salon & Barber Shop, Zestivities, Anna’s Pizza, and many other fine stores.

We are very excited to have as neighbors in the medical community the new 8500 square foot ACAC Express, Augusta Health Family Internal Medicine, and Physician George Guess, M.D., Classic Homeopathic Medicine / Family Physician.

Thank you for your patronage and trust in us at Advanced Center for Physical Therapy to meet and exceed your expectations as your physical therapy team. I look forward to seeing you all in the New Year and wish you a very Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and a safe holiday season for you and your family.

Sincerely,

Jim Schmidt, PT, MBA

CEO

ALEXANDRIA, VA ― National Physical Therapy Month, sponsored by the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), is a nationwide observance held each October. This year’s theme, “Move Forward: Physical Therapy Brings Motion to Life” reflects the physical therapist brand, “Physical therapists help you restore and improve motion to achieve long-term quality of life.”

”Freedom of motion is vital to our lives,” said APTA President R. Scott Ward, PT, PhD. “Motion is anti-aging and something we tend to take for granted until we lose it. Physical therapists are experts in the way the body moves, so we can help improve people’s quality of life by helping them move freely so they can do the things they want to do without pain and discomfort.”

When APTA went out to conduct consumer research to learn about attitudes and perceptions related to physical therapists, consumers made it clear that they were more likely to choose a physical therapist if they knew he or she could significantly improve mobility to perform daily activities and, in many cases, provide an alternative to painful and expensive surgery as well as manage or eliminate pain without medication.

To kick off National Physical Therapy Month, APTA has created an online toolkit with resources for APTA members, the media, and the general public.

Physical therapists are highly-educated, licensed health care professionals who can help patients reduce pain and improve or restore mobility – in many cases without expensive surgery or the side effects of prescription medications. APTA represents more than 72,000 physical therapists, physical therapist assistants, and students of physical therapy nationwide. Its purpose is to improve the health and quality of life of individuals through the advancement of physical therapist practice, education, and research. In most states, patients can make an appointment directly with a physical therapist, without a physician referral. Learn more about conditions physical therapists can treat and find a physical therapist in your area at www.moveforwardpt.com.
